Named for a rare grasshopper Sigaus childi, found only at Central Otago within the Earnscleugh gold mine tailings, just across the road from Grasshopper Rock vineyard. The site is fortuitously harsh and sufficiently challenging to make the vines work their hardest. Grasshopper Rock»
The quality of Shiraz grown to parched vineyards in Victoria's rugged western districts, has been well known throughout the world of wine since the days of gold rush and early settlement. Penfolds RWT Shiraz 1.5L MAGNUM 2003 $399.99

Shiraz by Penfolds of Barossa Valley. Stylistically very different from its stablemates, with darker soy/tar notes and a trace of pepper. The development of Penfolds Red Winemaking Trial reflects extraordinary progress in viticulture and winemaking. Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley shiraz matured in French oak barriques. At this stage of development the wine definitely needs air, a requirement, not a choice.
