The first and final word in world class Barossa Cabernet, aged in a luxurious selection of completely new French oak hogsheads. The Ashmead block is so low yielding that it was almost gutted and re established to more productive plantings. Elderton»
Serafino Maglieri came to McLaren Vale in 1968 and devoted his life to wine. From picking to pruning to cellarhand, he worked his way up to plant his own vines and build his first winery. Serafino»
Yealands Seaview Vineyard is exposed to some of the toughest growing conditions in Marlborough, high sunshine and billowing winds wind, cool nights and low rainfalls for a smaller, thicker skinned Pinot Gris of exciting intensity. Fruit from the relatively flat, coastal L6M block, provides a pure mineral elegance to the structural backbone. Yealands Estate»
The five most most exclusive parcels of old vine Shiraz, a secret component of the Barossa's most memorable vintages, hand picked off the De Fazio and Hillview vineyards at Belvidere and Moppa. Batches are crushed into traditional open top fermenters for a week of pumpovers, gently pressed into an extravagantly high proportion of new French oak hogsheads for two years maturation, followed by the final assemblage, unfiltered and unfined. Pirathon»
Samuel Dunn was an early Amherst resident, one of the first settlers to plant grapes in the Pyreness. His land was exploited for sheep grazing, until diggers found the locality alive with gold. Amherst»
A vineyard of some historical import, Bernoota is the original block, planted to the Follett family homestead along the banks of River Bremer, two decades before federation. A splendid construct of Langhorne Creek Shiraz Cabernet, selected from old vines around the distinguished Follett family vineyard, perennially released to resounding accolades. Lake Breeze»
The top cut, off a mere four hectares Pinot Noir, eighteen different rootstock and clone, all picked by hand and separately fermented. Parcels are treated to minimalist vinification and the extravagance of a Vaslin Bucher basket press, followed by a year in the finest French oak barriques and three years cellaring before release. Pressing Matters»
The highly opportune Pinot Noir vines at Bird In Hand are planted on the site of an ancient gold mine, a godsend of fortuitously fertile soils, magnificent growing conditions for stellar quality Adelaide Hill wines. Fermented in own bottle and aged five years on lees in true Méthode champenoise, the term of extended maturation imparts luxurious biscuit notes, chantilly crème and frais de bois. Bird In Hand»
Elderton Cabernet was winner of the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy in 1993, the following years it claimed back to back Gold and Trophy at the Barossa Wine Show. The 1994 vintage gave Elderton its first international Gold medal in London, an unbroken tradition of remarkable vintages have embossed the Elderton Estate name as a national champion, being chosen by Qantas for service in first class. Elderton»
The High Trellis paddock has been yielding the most splendid vintages of wine since the late 19th century, so nicknamed as the vines were the first to be trained above knee height following acquisition of the property by dArenberg. For decades, High Trellis Cabernet Sauvignon has been released to unanimous critical acclaim by the wine industry press and international cognoscente. dArenberg»
Peter Lehmann has always been Riesling's most outspoken advocate, he has claimed best Riesling trophy at the prestigious London International on more occasions than any other, he declares Riesling to be his wine of choice if marooned on the proverbial desert island. Early picking of fruit from a superior single vineyard in the salubrious climes of Eden Valley has produced a fresh, lively Riesling, expect this captivating wine to exhibit genuine charm and offer great longevity as it narrowly missed being bottled behind Lehmann's flagship Riesling label.. Peter Lehmann»
Lenton Brae can justifiably claim to be one of Margaret River's leading proponents of the ebullient fusion between Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, having claimed multi trophies and gold medals for the style at regional, state and national competitions. The site was chosen after a chance conversation with the owner of Moss Wood who mentioned that the soils were uniformly excellent and equal to those of the eminent vineyard nearby. Lenton Brae»

Peter Lehmann

http://www.peterlehmannwines.com/ - Peter Lehmann - Tasting Notes On Australian & New Zealand wines
Since its inception in 1979, Peter Lehmann Wines has emerged as one of Australia's most respected, energetic and innovative wine producers

All operations are carried out on a single site located near Tanunda, in the heart of the internationally famous Barossa Valley, South Australia. Peter Lehmann Wines has earned many medals and trophies along with great accolades from wine judges in Australia and throughout the world. Now a public company of international repute, Peter Lehmann Wines is regarded as one of Australia's pre-eminent wine brands.

The care and consideration which Peter Lehmann Wines brings to the selection of grapes enable the winery to produce its wide range of distinctive, award-winning and internationally acclaimed wines. Peter Lehmann Wines are created from grapes purchased from about 185 carefully selected independent growers as well as grapes grown in the four company-owned vineyards. Many of the growers families have worked the same vineyards for five and, in some cases, six generations. These Barossa vignerons tend to around 900 individual vineyards that run the gamut of the Barossa, through Lyndoch, Vine Vale, Light Pass, Greenock, Ebenezer and the Eden Valley.

It is significant that the majority of the vineyards from which Peter Lehmann source their fruit are classified as mature, ranging in ages from 20 to over 100 years old. Many are ungrafted and dry grown. The famous Barossa wine region is a little over an hour by car north of Adelaide, South Australia's capital. The Barossa comprises two regions, the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.

The wide range of soils and micro-climates produce a wealth of grape styles, providing the winemakers with the luxury of being able to select from the known vineyard flavour profile, the grapes which will create the style they are seeking

The Barossa Valley is generally less than 400 metres above sea-level and stretches from Williamstown in the south to Kapunda and Truro in the north. The red-brown soils are more fertile than those of the Eden Valley but rainfall here can be up to 50% less. Temperatures are generally about 2C warmer.

Eden Valley includes the country from Truro in the north through to Mount Pleasant in the south. It ranges between 400 metres and 600 metres above sea-level with most of the winegrowing country located in the higher, cooler, wetter sections of the region. Soils are rocky and acidic and winter rainfall is plentiful, averaging 255mm more per annum than the Barossa Valley. Temperatures are cooler therefore the growing season is longer.

There are about 550 growers in the Barossa, some of them sixth-generation Barossans. Together, they produce an average of 55,000 tonnes of grapes each vintage, harvested from over 8,000 hectares of vines. Internationally, the Barossa is unique in that it has never suffered an outbreak of phylloxera. This means that many vineyards still thrive on their own root stocks, distinguishing the Barosssa as a wine-growing region with some of the world's oldest vines.

While the Barossa's 60,000 tonnes represents only about 5% of the national crush, it is premium fruit

The history of the Barossa and its disproportionate presence in the super-premium categories make it Australia's most influential and internationally recognised wine region. Excellence in winemaking is about exploration and adventure. Peter Lehmann Wines is currently working with varieties recently introduced to the Barossa, including Tempranillo and Zinfandel varieties. The four company-owned Peter Lehmann vineyards, which produce just 2% of requirements, are comprised of the Stonewell, Riverflat, Andriske and Trillians Hill vineyards.

The Stonewell vineyard, of 18 hectares (45 acres), is situated in the Barossa and produces Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Grenache grapes. The 1 hectare (2.5 acres) Riverflat vineyard, located near the winery, grows Semillon and features a sprinkler system installed to promote the botrytis infection required for the production of Noble Semillon.

Similarly, the Andriske vineyard located near the winery is planted to 2.5 hectares (6 acres), predominantly with Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Riesling. The Trillians Hill vineyard in South Australia's Clare Valley is planted to 20 hectares (48 acres). It produced its first Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz crops in 1999.
